Undergraduate Migrations Scholars

Application Deadline: October 30, 2026
Application Timeframe: Fall
Trisha Bhujle holds her book, "Spotted on the Road."

Details

Join our team of undergraduate Migrations scholars to think in new ways about migration, refugee resettlement, and public-facing engagement.

As an undergraduate Migrations scholar, you'll collaborate with organizations in Ithaca and Syracuse to support refugee resettlement in Upstate New York, building on the community-engaged work developed in PUBPOL 3050: Refugee Resettlement Policy or another pre-approved migrations-focused course. You'll meet potential partners at the Refugee Pathways Symposium on December 1.

Throughout the spring semester, you'll meet regularly with a small, collaborative cohort, connect with community partners, and develop a public-facing or partner-facing deliverable, such as a policy brief, op-ed, educational resource, or community guide. The output should make a meaningful contribution to refugee resettlement efforts in the Upstate New York region.

Scholars are guided and mentored by Julie Ficarra, associate teaching professor at the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to undergraduate students interested in migration studies who have completed at least one migrations-focused course. For example, Refugee Resettlement Policy (PUBPOL 3050) or Migration: Controversies, Histories, and Perspectives (ILRGL 3810/AMST 3800/LSP 3810/PUBPOL 3710/SOC 3820). Previous Migrations scholars are welcome to apply again.

You should be in good standing academically and have no unresolved disciplinary charges or sanctions, be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at the time of the fellowship (i.e., not on leave of absence), and be on campus in Ithaca for in-person meetings and mentoring.

Selected scholars are required to attend the first meeting on January 27, 2027 at 4:30 p.m. If you have a scheduling conflict, please let us know as soon as possible.
