Following this, a similar ritual is carried out--this time for the Jawbolan Tree. This tree bears much fruit--a sign of fertility and prosperity--and is believed to be a spirit of the Shan (T'ai Yai). Other rituals included in this documentary are the following: Cao Syg Spirit or La Sat Spirit (Spirit of the Hunt), the Kae Bon Ritual--dance and music to repay the spirits for favors granted, Phi Bao Phi Sao (Spirits of a Young Man and a Young Woman), Sword Dance, Phi Ma (Burmese Spirit) & Phi Chao Thi (Guardian Spirit of the Area).

Dr. Harald Hundius, Dept. of Thai, Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai Univ. Northern Thai

A male singer and a female singer sing extemporaneously on the theme of development and the problems of change. Accompanied by khui (flute), stringed instrument and drum. The story line: The North has changed a great deal--electricity has come. They need to survive, but survive for what? The man says women make money; the woman says it is because men sell their daughters like meat. This is not a Buddhist tradition; society is turned upside-down. They complain about deforestation, especially by large companies who are above the law. They point out that more money can be made by selling drugs than by farming. Northern Thai traditions and values should be preserved. (The camera focuses on Cornell Prof. David Wyatt in the audience.)
