Art and everday life come together in an intimate story about four
generations of a famous Balinese family, bearers of gamelan music and Legong
dance traditions. The documentary follows an important event in the history of
this family--the passing down of the Legong dance legacy to the youngest member
of the family, a nine-year-old girl. From the first lesson, given by the
mother, to the final debut, presided over by the family's ninety-year-old
patriarch and gamelan master, the filmmakers capture the intensity with which
tradition evolves and is passed on in Bali. The result is an intimate view into
this dynamic culture, steeped in ancient traditions and increasingly exposed to
the modern world.

"A rather bold story about a modern couple resorting to artificial
insemination and the tragic consequences it has for the couple when the baby is
slightly deformed. Hendy Hendro (Roy Marten) and Pia (Yenny Rachman) have been
married for five years but they do not have any children. Hendy is actually
sterile, but wife Pia gallantly takes the blame as being the one who is barren.
Due to parental pressure for them to have children, Hendy and Pia consider
artificial insemination. Pia meets her old friend, Dr. Jalal (Robby Sugara),
who recommends that the couple see Prof. Tsuhiro (Wahyu Sihombing). After being
artificially inseminated, Pia gives birth to a baby girl, normal in all
respects except for a slant eye and flat nose. Hendy finds it difficult to

important events which have occurred since she began living in a certain red
light district of Jakarta. The arrest of her father, on charges of black market
smuggling, is a difficult blow for his wife, Lastri (Rima Melati) and two
daughters, Rini and Ani (Ria Irawan). Suddenly they have to leave their fancy
home in a new, fashionable, development and move to a simple, highrise, apartment
in a disreputable district of the city. The plot centers around their family
difficulties and their attempts to clear Prabowo. This film is considered one
of the best films of its era. Zainal Abidin's acting is excellent, and Dewi
Yull's portrayal of a melancholic character is very convincing. Supported by an
interesting plot, the film was considered worthy of nomination for the Piala
Citra.

I Nyoman Radjeg, I Ketut Yosi, I Nyoman Sumandhi, I Made Suardika,
Ni Made Suartini, I Ketut Ramawa, Ni Ketut Suartini, I Wayan Suanda.
A perceptive, intimate journey into traditional and modern Balinese life, seen
through the eyes of two brothers caught in the cross-currents of ancient and
modern ways. One boy is a student of the traditional Balinese art of shadow
puppetry, apprentice to the village "shadow master," a combination
priest/comedian/puppeteer. The other boy has been seduced by Western
values--motorcycles and gambling--which cost his family precious farmland. As
narrated by the master's daughter (herself a dancer), the life and culture of a
Balinese village--including a cremation ceremony-- are recorded with remarkable
beauty. More importantly, the camera reveals, but never invades, a lyrical
world where life and art are inseparable.

Part of Public Broadcasting's Odyssey Series. In Balinese cosmology,
demons are thought to dwell in the watery underworld, gods in the upper world,
and humans in the middle realm between them. The program shows how human
efforts in music, dance, theater and ritual are directed toward maintaining a
proper balance between these three realms and between the forces of growth and
decay. The culmination of these efforts is the Eka Dasa Rudra ceremony, in
which the entire Balinese population is mobilized once every century to
transform eleven demons into beneficent spirits. Shows facets of this ceremony
