Art and everday life come together in an intimate story about four generations of a famous Balinese family, bearers of gamelan music and Legong dance traditions. The documentary follows an important event in the history of this family--the passing down of the Legong dance legacy to the youngest member of the family, a nine-year-old girl. From the first lesson, given by the mother, to the final debut, presided over by the family's ninety-year-old patriarch and gamelan master, the filmmakers capture the intensity with which tradition evolves and is passed on in Bali. The result is an intimate view into this dynamic culture, steeped in ancient traditions and increasingly exposed to the modern world.

The plot centers around their family difficulties and their attempts to clear Prabowo. This film is considered one of the best films of its era. Zainal Abidin's acting is excellent, and Dewi Yull's portrayal of a melancholic character is very convincing. Supported by an interesting plot, the film was considered worthy of nomination for the Piala Citra.

The Japanese promised freedom but brought cruelty and hardship to Indonesia. While providing the military training that enabled Indonesians to fight a revolutionary war against the Dutch, the Japanese also created a widespread network of control and surveillance that still exists today. This program examines the period of Japanese rule and visits a small community, or kampung, to show the effects of Japanese influence. When the nationalist movement finally won independence from the Dutch, it was the Japanese-trained army, not the people, who ruled the nation.

In this part, the Blairs search for the nomadic Punan Dyaks, through eight hundred miles of untamed and uncharted rainforest. The Punan Dyaks are free-roving masters of the interior, the "dream wandering" tribe believed to no longer exist. The brothers struggle inwards, plagued by torrential rain, quicksand, leeches, and virulent insects. Eventually, they find and live with the Punan Dyaks, where they are initiated into the spiritual mysteries of the "dream wanderers." Lorne and Lawrence join the dance of the hornbill and get tattooed with the symbol of Aping--the Tree of All Life. This symbol, their shaman explains to them, they will now bear wherever they travel amongst the tribes of man, as a reminder that all forms are part of a single tree.

A perceptive, intimate journey into traditional and modern Balinese life, seen through the eyes of two brothers caught in the cross-currents of ancient and modern ways. One boy is a student of the traditional Balinese art of shadow puppetry, apprentice to the village "shadow master," a combination priest/comedian/puppeteer. The other boy has been seduced by Western values--motorcycles and gambling--which cost his family precious farmland. As narrated by the master's daughter (herself a dancer), the life and culture of a Balinese village--including a cremation ceremony-- are recorded with remarkable beauty. More importantly, the camera reveals, but never invades, a lyrical world where life and art are inseparable.
