Filmed on location, four beloved stories of India, Indonesia, Korea
and Japan are told through the art and the stirring performances these tales
have inspired for centuries. "The Ramayana," the epic adventures of
India's legendary hero, are illustrated with Indian paintings, Indonesian
sculpture, Javanese shadow play and dramatic re-enactments. In the "Korean
Masked Dance Drama," told by actors wearing audaciously conceived masks,
social satire is "masked" by bold humor and comic dance. "Gita
Govinda," India's great erotic poem is interpreted by a beautiful dancer
and celebrated in lyricalpainted images. "The Tale of Genji," the
amorous adventures of Prince Genji are told by a Japanese woman in period
costume, as colorful paintings from scrolls and screens illustrate Japan's most
famous romantic novel. Combining the visual arts with performance in a new and
original format, "Great Tales in Asian Art" is an imaginative and
entertaining introduction to the art of Asia.

Two episodes of the British TV series,"Rear Window," concerning the
rise of nations and nationalism, featuring Cornell's Prof. Benedict Anderson, based
on his book by the same title. According to Anderson, nationalism is more
closely related to religion than politics--the concern over death, abstract
loyalty over generations, poetry and prophecy. Although most nations originated
during and since the eighteenth century, they invariably consider themselves to
be ancient. These views and others are illustrated by the nation of England,
considered "English" while actually of Norman, Belgian and German
origin.

This program explores the
lifestyle of the people who live near the Mekong’s banks in Tibet and
southwestern China. Tibetan
shepherds; Chinese fisherman, farmers, and traders; the Bai people, of the
ancient kingdom of Kali; and the Dai people, called “The Free”, go
about their business as they discuss their concerns about the over cutting of
timber, water pollution, and the impact of 14 proposed dams. Local economies, which range from tea
growing and rubber harvesting to tourism and shipping, are also explored, along
with topics of history, customs, and religion such as the Silk Road, the
binding of feet, and Buddhism. 52
