Graduate students at Cornell are encouraged to work with faculty members on research projects in order to develop their skills in all aspects of the research process -- preparation of data files and file management; variable construction; data analysis; literature review; and write-up of research findings. Research training exposes students to a wide range of software programs and gives them opportunities to learn informally about the objectives and methods of demographic research. Thesis projects and co-authored research publications by graduate students and faculty often result from these collaborations.
