Requirements for admission include:

  • A Bachelor's degree
  • The Graduate Record Examination
  • TOEFL for non-native speakers of English (minimum score 550)

The M.P.S. degree requires two semesters of residency and a written project, which is usually completed during a summer of residence. The M.S. degree requires a minimum of two semesters of residency (usually students take four semesters of course study) and a thesis. Admission to Ph.D. candidacy requires a M.S. degree in Sociology or a related discipline from Cornell or from another university. The doctoral program usually takes an additional three years beyond the masters, two of which are spent on course work and the third on thesis work. Additional time may be required for fieldwork. Ph.D. requirements also include a comprehensive examination and a dissertation.
