Project Title:
Studying the Legal-Carceral Interface in India: Mapping the field
Project Abstract:
My research deals with the legal-carceral interface in India. I'm interested in how punishments articulated through the principles of exceptionality affect both incarcerated populations and the communities they belong to. I intend to trace the interactions and processes of mediations between prisoners, prison administrators, lawyers and family members. In an age of violent cultural nationalism, I hope to contribute towards empirical and ethnographic study on the relationship between forms of incarceration and nation-building projects. During this trip i propose to work with legal organizations that can potentially facilitate my access to the field and help me explore the various channels via which I may learn about spaces and people I do not have direct access to.
