Project Title:
Foreign Investment, Heterogeneous Multinationals, and Political Consequences: Southeast Asian States’ Varied Responses to Chinese Investment
Project Abstract:
Why do powerful states sometimes succeed in using outbound invetsment to advance strategic relations, while on other occasions face backlash, as demosntrated in Cambodia's suspension of China-funded Areng dam? This article investigates China’s use of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in expanding its political influence overseas in continental Southeast Asia. I use a “most similar” research design in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. This research informs policy makers in Southeast Asia about how to manage Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.
