Project Title:
Threading Maritime Pathways: Art, Islam and the Making of the Modern in Indonesia during the New Order Period 1970-1998
Project Abstract:
My research will focus on the complex negotiations and subtle conversations between Islamic religion and aesthetics, ethnic identity, and Western modernism in the longue durée of modernity in the archipelago using materiality in the Indian Ocean as threads to further connect with modern Islamic art in Indonesia during the New Order period. I will take into account both precolonial artistic and visual traditions as well as notions of colonial modernity that have been highly influential in the making of the modern in Indonesian art.
