Project Title:
Gender and Land in Myanmar
Project Abstract:
Land has become a critical topic as Myanmar seeks to establish itself as a legitimate democratic and capitalist state. My research in summer 2016 will examine rural women’s access to land and agricultural roles and challenges, and the ways in which these are changing under a new political regime, within my larger inquiry into how struggles over land reflect and affect contemporary state-building. In May and June I will work with a local land rights organization to participate in a national Female Farmers Forum, and conduct interviews with farmers and community leaders in three rural areas to examine the ways in which gender, class, ethnicity and ecology mediate land access and use.
