Project Title:
The Emergence of “Female Hormones” and New Modes of Bodily Care in Contemporary Japan
Project Abstract:
This project examines the emergence of “female hormones” as an object of care in contemporary Japan. As the population greys and the birth rate falls below replacement levels, popular media materials have encouraged women to optimize their hormonal health through incorporating specific foods and exercises into their regimes of “daily care.” Through interviews with doctors and analyses of medical journals in Kansai, this project traces how the isolation of reproductive hormones as objects of medical attention and intervention inaugurates a therapeutic need to regulate the body to ensure that hormones remain functioning and healthy.
