Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, Palestinian scholar and political activist, will speak on “Peace in the Middle East: Who Needs It?” on Thursday, September 20, at 4:30 pm in Bailey Hall as a speaker in the Einaudi Center's Foreign Policy Distinguished Speaker Series. She will be introduced by President David Skorton.
Dr. Ashrawi is the Founder and Executive Committee Chair of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH), and an elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. From 1996 to 1998 she served as the Minister of Higher Education and Research. Dr. Ashrawi was also a member of the Political and Diplomatic Committees during the Intifada and the negotiations. In 1991, she was named Official Spokesperson of the Palestinian Delegation to the Middle East Peace Process and a member of the Leadership Committee.
Dr. Ashrawi holds a B.A. and an M.A. from the American University of Beirut and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. From 1973 to 1995, Dr. Ashrawi was a faculty member of Birzeit University where she held several positions including that of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. In 1995, Ashrawi came to Cornell as the Henry E. and Nancy Horton Bartels World Affairs Fellow and to speak on “The Middle East Peace Process: A Personal Account.”
She is the recipient of numerous international peace, human rights and democracy awards, including the Olaf Palme Award, Sydney Peace Prize, the Defender of Democracy Award, and more recently, the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation. She has also received several honorary doctorate degrees from universities in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Arab world.
Dr. Ashrawi has written extensively and published several books. This Side of Peace, published in 1995, gained world acclaim. Dr. Ashrawi serves on the Advisory Board of several international and local organizations including the World Bank Middle East and North Africa (MENA), United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the International Human Rights Council.
The Foreign Policy Distinguished Speaker Series features prominent leaders in international affairs who can address topical issues from a variety of perspectives. Dr. Ashrawi’s talk is also sponsored by the Department of Near Eastern Studies, Alice Cook House, and Office of the Vice Provost for International Relations.
The Speaker Series is part of the Foreign Policy Initiative at Cornell led by the Einaudi Center to maximize the intellectual impact of Cornell’s outstanding resources in this area. The Center coordinates on-going efforts through a newly established Foreign Policy Network at Cornell.
