Purpose
The purpose of this program is to make it possible for graduate students interested in Latin America and the Caribbean to carry out research in the field in order to acquire as profound and intimate a knowledge as possible of the language, culture and geography; to gather field data; and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions in the field. A major priority of these grants is to provide graduate students with experience in developing independent research projects and conducting hands-on field research in Latin America or the Caribbean. It is hoped that this will make students’ proposals to external sources of funding for dissertation research more competitive. In no case are these grants to be a substitute for seeking dissertation funding from such external sources.
Eligibility
Students become eligible for these funds only after having registered for the Graduate Minor in Latin American Studies and completing two area courses towards the minor – at least one of which must be outside the student’s major field of study. The status of applicants will be reviewed by the LASP Director to determine eligibility. We strongly encourage students interested in applying for this program to make an appointment with the Latin American Studies Program to discuss the proposal. Please contact us at 607-255-3345 or lasp@is.cornell.edu.
Amount of Grant
Grants will be limited to a maximum of $2,000. Proposed budgets should reflect the minimal amount required for travel and maintenance for at least 14 days in the field. The total travel time cannot exceed two months.
