This conference compares the landmark development project initiated in 1952, the Cornell Peru Project with contemporary, community initiated projects designed to address sustainability, conservation of knowledge and biodiversity. The original Cornell Peru Project aimed to bring the Indian population of the community of Vicos living under hacienda peonage into the 20th century, improve education and health, as well as instill self determination. The conference brings together representatives from the community of Vicos, researchers who took part n the original project, academics, and directors of non-governmental organizations. The historical and contemporary Vicos projects provide a unique opportunity to compare participatory and cooperative developments project aimed at sustainability with development efforts of the past.
