The Cornell International Education Network (CIEN) was formed in 1991:

• To promote professional development among staff and faculty working with international students and US students studying abroad,
• To share information and resources, and
• To plan and implement intercultural training programs for faculty, staff, and students.

Members represent a broad cross-section of the university, including the Mario Einaudi Center, the International Students and Scholars Office, Cornell Abroad, graduate and undergraduate admissions, Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, Cornell Career Services, Gannett: Cornell University Health Services, college student service offices, and Campus Life.

The CIEN meeting on Thursday Oct. 19 will focus on Undergraduate Research Abroad with student panelists who studied abroad.  It will be presented by Cornell Abroad and should be of broad interest.

Building International Research Into Cornell Undergraduate Education

This presentation will introduce several undergraduate students who conducted research as part of their study abroad semester.  Their research topics range from Tibetan herbal doctors seeking certification for government health posts; to redrawing territory lines in the new federalism in Nepal; to young people's political choices in post conflict Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia; and more. 

Come listen to undergraduate students present their research in a panel moderated by Cornell Abroad.

CIEN Schedule:

• December 17th (date to be confirmed by members): Alice Wu, Toolbox for the Intercultural Practitioner.
• January 21st: Catherine Holmes, Associate Dean of Students for Student Activities, and Janet Shortall, Associate Director of Cornell United Religious Work (CURW), will present on the topic of international student organizations on campus which will include crisis management, expectations of organizations and advisors, and support for advisors.
• February 18th: Humphrey Fellows Program, 30th Anniversary. Terry Tucker and Francine Jasper from International Programs-CALS will present along with several Humphrey Fellows.
• March 18th:  Fredrik Logevall, Director,  and Gil Levine, former Director and Interim Director, Einaudi Ctr., topic TBA
• April 15th:  Melanie Dreyer-Lude, Assistant Professor of Acting/Directing in the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance will share her experience with the German/American collaboration "Outside Inn" and introduce her latest project linking Turkish and American artists in a project that will interrogate issues and definitions of female identity.  She welcomes the opportunity to brainstorm with colleagues about how her research can achieve a broad and lasting impact on local communities.
• May 20th: CU International Gateway presentation with Laurie Damiani and Linda Schmidt from the International Initiatives Office of the Vice Provost for International Relations. More details to follow. The second half of the meeting will be used to brainstorm ideas for next year's meetings and to introduce the CIEN 2010-2011 co chairs.
