Regional Visiting Fellow Program

The Institute for European Studies offers appointments as Regional Visiting Fellows to faculty at two- and four-year colleges in upstate New York who are engaged in teaching or research in any area of modern European studies. Candidates must have a Ph.D. and be either a U.S. citizen or a resident alien to be eligible for this appointment. Appointments last for one year, with the possibility for renewal for up to three years.

While this competitive program does not provide financial support to the fellow, it supports individual research as well as curriculum development in European Studies by putting rare library resources at the fellow’s fingertips and increasing opportunities for collegiality through Cornell affiliation.

The program also benefits Cornell by helping to fulfill the university-wide commitment to outreach and strengthening the Institute's growing role as a center of research, leadership, and resources for trans-European Studies.

Read what RVF appointees have to say about the program in the attachment to the right.

Library Access and More

Regional fellows enjoy affiliate status with Cornell, including a library ID card permitting access to all Cornell libraries. They are eligible to receive a computer account, to purchase regular permits for campus parking, and to enroll in the University's benefits program if desired.

Each year the Institute invites fellows to an autumn seminar and welcome reception to meet other fellows and share their research. Fellows also receive special invitations to other Institute-sponsored events and are invited and encouraged to participate in all of the Institute's activities.

At the end of each academic year, fellows provide a brief narrative describing the results of their involvement with the program.
