Curriculum Units from the 2004 Grant Cycle
Five curriculum units on Europe are available from the Institute's 2004 grant cycle for teachers and others to download free. They are directly aligned with New York State Department of Education learning standards. The complete set of units is also available free on CD-ROM upon request; please contact the outreach coordinator at 607-255-7592.
Music as Survival: Catherine Hackert, 6th-12th grade music teacher at Glens Falls High School in Ballston Spa, explores the role of musician Alma Rose in the Women's Orchestra during her incarceration at Auschwitz.
Modern Europe Research Project: Kara Frostclapp, 9th and 12th grade social studies teacher at Charles O'Dickerson High School in Trumansburg, fills in gaps toward the end of the New York curriculum for Europe, covering topics such as globalism, pollution and rising consumerism.
Europe and the American Revolutionary War: Jennie Higgins, 9th and 12th grade social studies teacher at Cayuga Onondaga BOCES in Auburn, covers the involvement of European countries in the American Revolutionary War in the context of issues such as foreign intervention and nationalism.
Don Quijote - A Cultural Framework: Paula Twomey, 10th-12th grade foreign languages teacher at Ithaca High, illuminates the cultural framework for elements of Don Quijote and the social context of 16th Century Spain within which Cervantes wrote the classic.
European Union: Kim O'Neil, 6th grade teacher at Liverpool Elementary, focuses on the newly interdependent economies of Europe, including guidance for students to conduct online research and create a PowerPoint presentation about a European Union member. O'Neil's grant was funded by Syracuse University's Center for European Studies (CES), which is Cornell's partner in the Upstate New York Consortium for Trans-European Studies, and from the Syracuse University European Union Center.
These curriculum units also are available free through Syracuse University's Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) Web site (http://thegateway.org) to increase reach to teachers nationwide.
