Outreach

The aim of the Institute for European Studies outreach initiative is to increase and enhance the study of Europe both at Cornell and in the larger community, while encouraging integration across the now outdated east-west division of the area.

As a recipient of federal U.S. Department of Education Title VI funding, IES extends its resources to the public throughout each year. In a testament to its on-going commitment to outreach, the Institute was awarded a grant in 2007 by the European Union Commission as part of the “Getting to Know Europe” competition honoring the EU’s 50th anniversary. Outreach audiences include colleges and universities, schools (K-12), businesses, community organizations, the media and the general public.

Regular lunchtime seminars provide a forum for presentation of works in progress. Several workshops and conferences are scheduled each year, and the Institute co-sponsors events initiated by colleagues in other departments and programs throughout the university. Please regularly check our calendar of events to keep informed of upcoming events.

The Institute for European Studies offers appointments as Regional Visiting Fellows to faculty at two- and four-year colleges in upstate New York who are engaged in teaching or research in any area of modern European studies.

The Institute offers several programs for area schools, including curriculum development grants, a speakers bureau, and teacher-training workshops, to enhance the curriculum in grades K-12.

The Institute offers a video lending library of 144 feature films and documentaries on Europe. Teachers, faculty and students in the U.S. or Canada can borrow these materials for educational purposes at no charge for up to three weeks.

If you are a member of the media, the University requests that the press direct all initial inquiries to the Cornell Press Relations Office by phone at (607) 255-6074, or by email at pressoffice@cornell.edu.
