Citation & Copyright

Citation guidelines for documents from Integrated History

We hope that students and researchers will take advantage of the primary sources available on this website. We also expect that in so doing, users will properly cite this material. As with any source, the precise format for citation varies from discipline to discipline and style manual to style manual, but you should always include two basic elements:

  • A full citation for the original source of the primary text, which is always noted at the end of each document. This original source is sometimes a print source, sometimes a website. Whenever possible, this citation should always include the original author and/or translator of the text.
  • The URL for the specific document that you are citing and the date on which you accessed that document. Although we have every expectation that the documents on this website have a permanent home here, noting the date that you retrieved something from the website acknowledges the fact that websites do sometimes disappear and links do sometimes become dead. Given this reality, it is all the more important to include as much information as possible about the original source, so that a reader might be able to trace your citation even if it is no longer possible to access the webpage that you used.

Copyright and Electronic Reproduction

Before placing a copy of any document on this website, we have made every effort either to ascertain that the document is in the public domain, and therefore can be electronically reproduced for non-commercial purposes, or to obtain the express permission of the author/translator/owner to reproduce the text for non-commercial purposes on this website. But if you have reason to believe that a text has been inappropriately included in the archive—especially if you are the author or translator—please contact us immediately.

We have not made any substantive alterations to the texts created by other authors or translators, except for 1) correction of obvious mistakes that seemed to be the result of scanning errors; and 2) brief explanatory footnotes. All other annotation and background information for specific documents is included in supplemental documents separate from, though linked to, the original document.

Permission for electronic reproduction of sources is granted only for non-commercial personal and educational purposes. No permission is granted for reproduction for commercial purposes.
