About Us
The Institute for European Studies was founded in 1973 as the Western Societies Program (WSP). Over the years, responding to the changes in Europe, the WSP evolved into a joint institute housing a West European Societies Program and a Slavic and East European Studies Program.
Soon after 1989, the two programs were blended into the current Institute for European Studies with its trans-European focus. The Institute's directors & faculty affiliates are scholars working on all areas of Europe and neighboring regions.
