Europe Day Celebration

The Institute for European Studies at Cornell University celebrated the 50th anniversary of the European Union with a week of European-themed events hosted by local businesses throughout Ithaca. Events were open to the public. Full event details are available from our poster.

EU Speaker Series

IES and The Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies will bring key European experts to Ithaca during the fall 2007. In each case, the experts will give a public lecture to the Cornell and Ithaca communities and will also take part in visits with students, businesspeople, local leaders and other groups to raise public understanding of many complex issues facing Europe today.

European Film Festival

Organized and hosted by Cornell Cinema, one of Ithaca’s premier art house theatres, will highlight European cultural and linguistic diversity through spotlighting Europe’s less commonly taught languages and rich cinematographic heritage.

European Treasure Chest

A traveling ‘treasure chest’ of European artifacts is available for use by elementary and middle school teachers, giving our youngest students of Europe an opportunity to ‘experience’ the continent without leaving the classroom. The box includes CDs of traditional European music, DVDs of all kinds, art, instruments, maps, costumes, archaeological artifacts, historical documents, and items related to Homer’s Odyssey and to Greek civilization, including contributions from our Cephalonian sister city partners. Please contact Catherine Perkins at cp227@cornell.edu or (607) 255-7592 for details on how you may use this resource.

It’s Greek to Me

To acknowledge the twinning program with Cephalonia and to utilize our expertise in the field of Modern Greek and the support of our active Hellenic Student Association, the IES is planning a series of in-school activities specifically based around Greek language and culture. A workshop on Greek dance, a demonstration on Greek music (through the Cornell Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Music Ensemble) as well as presentations on the origins of democracy in Greece and programs on the Greek alphabet.
