2005 - 2006
Professor Juan Díez Medrano (Professor of Sociology at the Dept. of Teoría Sociológica (Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales) of the Universidad de Barcelona) was the Luigi Einaudi Chairholder for the spring 2006 semester. Sponsored by Mabel Berezin (Sociology), Díez Medrano held a dual appointment with Sociology and IES and taught a core course for the Modern European Studies Concentration, SOC 341/GOVT 341 (Modern European Society and Politics). He gave the Luigi Einaudi Lecture at 4:30pm in the A.D. White House on April 4th and spoke about "Europeanized National Societies or a Society Called Europe?" Díez Medrano authored many articles and books in the fields of ethnic conflict, nationalism, and European integration.
Russell King (Geography, University of Sussex) visited Cornell September 18-23, 2005. Sponsored by Professor Gail Holst-Warhaft (Classics, IES), King gave a series of lectures and met with interested students and faculty throughout the week. He gave the Luigi Eianudi Lecture: "The New Map of European Migration," took part in an IES brown bag seminar panel discussion with Stephen Castles (Migration and Refugee Studies & Director of the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford) on "Dilemmas of European Migration in a Global Era" and gave a talk on "Albanian Migrants to Italy: From Stigmatisation to Integration" as part of the Italian Studies Colloquia.
