Sewall OERTLING
This art catalog, containing over 30 color illustrations, was published to accompany an exhibition organized by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University. The exhibition was curated by Ellen Avril and Sewall Oertling, and presented at the Museum in the fall and winter of 2002, and also at the Tyler Art Gallery, SUNY Oswego.
The exhibit was drawn from the collection of Rodney "Pete" and Marge Hendricksen. The Henricksen collection was formed in Japan in the 1960s and early 1970s, a time and place of extraordinary opportunity for collecting.
This exhibition features paintings and calligraphy mainly from the Qing dynasty (1644-1922), and contains works in many traditional styles and subjects. It shows a range of artistic styles and evolving traditions from the seventeenth century right up to the founding of the Republic, with a work by a court artist of Pu Yi, the last emperor.

Ellen AVRIL
This art catalog, containing over 70 color illustrations, was published to accompany an exhibition organized by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University. The exhibition was created by Ellen Avril, and presented at the Museum in the summer of 2004.
The exhibit was selected from the collection of Eunice and Herbert Shatzman. It presents a superb collection of ceramics dating from the Neolithic period to the fourteenth century, highlighting the technical and aesthetic sophistication of southern Chinese high-fired stoneware vessels with green glazes. Many of these objects were made for burial in tombs, where they would supply the needs of the deceased in the afterlife, and facilitate earthly communication with heavenly spirits.

Daniel McKEE
This catalog, containing over 70 color illustrations, was published to accompany an exhibition organized by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, curated by Ellen Avril and guest curator Daniel McKee, and presented at the Museum in the winter of 2006.
Surimono, privately published woodblock prints, comprise one of the most elegant and literary genres of Japanese printmaking traditions. Commissioned by poetry clubs, typically as gifts in celebration of the lunar New Year, surimono resulted from a unique collaboration of poets, artists, calligraphers, and printing houses. Clever integrations of text and image were combined with the most advanced printing techniques to produce deluxe presentation sheets for a sophisticated and highly literate audience. This book presents superb examples dating from the pinnacle of surimono production, in the early nineteenth century, from the collection of Joanna Haab Schoff (Class of 1955).
