Chinese Teacher Training Workshop
From Hash to Harmony: Creating Effective Classroom Activities for Advanced Mandarin Students of Different Language Backgrounds
Saturday, June 25, 2005
9:00AM -to- 3:00PM
Third and fourth year Mandarin classes pose particular difficulties for teachers, as they often combine students with very different types of language training: heritage learners, students returning from overseas study programs, and students who have steadily made their way through a regular Mandarin course sequence in the U.S. Since staffing limitations generally prohibit us from offering separate courses for each of these three types of student, we're interested in finding new ways to help all three types make progress within the same class.
This one-day workshop will feature two guest speakers. Dr. Vivian Ling, Editor of the Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, and Dr. Cornelius Kubler, Stanfield Professor of Asian Studies at Williams College. Both have a wealth of experience in teaching such mixed groups of advanced learners. They will speak and lead discussions about this issue in our all-day workshop.
The Workshop fee is $30 per person. Paticipants will receive a free overnight stay at the Clarion Hotel in Ithaca, plus dinner on Friday, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
The 2005 workshop is full. If you would liek to be put on our mailing list for the next CTTW in 2007, please submit this on-line form.
