The East Asia Program (EAP) coordinates teaching, research and extracurricular activities on East Asia. As the main advocate for East Asian studies on campus we provide information about courses, fellowships, seminars, workshops, conferences, films, and numerous other cultural events and activities pertaining to China, Japan and Korea. Anyone with an interest in East Asia is welcome to attend East Asia Program events.
GENERAL
Admissions: The East Asia Program does not admit students to Cornell or confer degrees. Undergraduate admissions are handled through the Undergraduate Admission Office, while graduate admissions are handled by the Cornell Graduate School and the relevant graduate field. Once you are admitted to Cornell you may affiliate with the EAP.
List Serves: EAP maintains two e-mail announcement lists to keep members informed of East Asia-related news and funding opportunities. The first list, EAPNEWS-L, updates members on lectures, performances, films, cultural programs, and related campus events. The second list, EAPGRANTS-L, keeps members posted on fellowships and grants, post-docs, job openings, short-term teaching positions, conferences, calls for papers, and related news both at Cornell and elsewhere. Please sign up either of these lists by clicking on the appropriate link.
Fellowships and Travel Grants: EAP offers a number of funding opportunities to Cornell graduate students concentrating on China, Japan, and/or Korea, including academic year fellowships, summer support for intensive language study, and research/travel grants.
UNDERGRADUATES
Undergraduates may major in Asian Studies, which includes study of one or more East Asian languages and other coursework, or select a Concentration in East Asian Studies, which requires the completion of 18 credits of coursework in East Asian Studies. We invite undergraduates in any field who are interested in East Asia to complete our undergraduate student information form and sign up for our list serves in order to keep you informed about relevant news and events. By signing up, you will receive our annual newsletter and other periodic updates of EAP activities.
GRADUATE STUDENTS
Be sure to register with the East Asia Program: If you are a graduate student concentrating on East Asia (either as a major or minor field), please complete a graduate student information form each year. This will activate your eligibility for the many fellowships and research/travel grants available to graduate students working on East Asia. In addition, you will automatically receive our annual newsletter and regular announcements of special events and activities. The East Asia Program is required to maintain contact information and track the whereabouts, annual funding, dissertation topic, etc. in order to seek and maintain funding for graduate fellowships and other activities that support the study of East Asia at Cornell, e.g. language instruction, library acquisitions, research, special programs, and the like.
Graduate degrees in East Asia-Related Studies: Cornell currently offers an M.A. in Asian Studies, a Ph.D. in East Asian Literature, and a Ph.D. degree in various fields (such as history, anthropology, sociology, etc.) where the student may choose to focus on East Asia. Contact the Department of Asian Studies for more information about the M.A. in Asian Studies and the Ph.D. in East Asian Literature. For information about Ph.D. programs available in various disciplines, click here and scroll down for a listing of the fields in which Cornell graduate students pursue the study of East Asia.
