Distance Learning
Cooperative Efforts
Brown university and Harvard requested syllabi from our Cornell program to conduct newly initiated courses at their universities.
The program has been involved with DL in various forms:
First Pilot Program
In 1999 a pilot program has been conducted with a student in Princeton N.J. The interactions between instructor involved telephone conversations, paid for by the student, e-mail support, course-info support and one visit to Ithaca (incombination with another destination in this direction). Contacts with the student are ongoing. She now is situated with her husband, a CEO, transferred to The Netherlands and does three different kinds of volunteer work. Contact now are conducted in Dutch. Her Dutch is now well into the advanced levels.
Second Pilot Program
This program was set up in the Fall of 2000 by a colleague from Youngstown State University for one of their students. An attempt was made to establish contact with desktop publishing. However the technology turned out to be too costly and arrangements were made for telephone contact for 2 hours per week. After one semester the student had a good command of beginners level Dutch.
DL desktop conferencing with Hamilton College
Spring 2004
A desktop conferencing arrangement is set up to conduct oral testing sessions with students of Dutch at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY
