Standardized test of Dutch as a Foreign Language

Dewaruci Indonesie

Since 1986 the students of Dutch have been able to participate in a world wide standardized test for Dutch Language Mastery. This enables students to study and/or work in The Netherlands while instantly determining the level of their mastery of the language by showing the certificate which they had obtained to interested parties; such as universities, employers, researchers, libraries.

The exam, called Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (CNaVT), has six different versions ("profielen") each focussing on a different usage of the language.
Each exam tests the four language skills:

  • Leesvaardigheid (Reading Skills)
  • Schrijfvaardigheid (Writing Skills)
  • Luistervaardigheid (Listening Comprehension)
  • Spreekvaardigheid (Speaking Skills)

The exams are conceived, written, distributed worldwide and evaluated by the Universities of Leuven (Belgium) and Amsterdam (the Netherlands) under the auspices of De Taalunie. For information on the tests, see http://www.cnavt.org/.

The tests can be administered at Cornell University. Please contact Chrissy Hosea for information.
