The Cornell Dutch Language Program
The Dutch Language Program at Cornell has a history dating as far back as World War II. The program aims to provide Cornell students, faculty and staff as well as students from colleges and High Schools of the Upstate New York Fingerlakes Region with skills and knowledge of Dutch and Flemish.
The program is housed in the Department of German Studies in Goldwin Smith Hall.
Courses
DUTCH 1210 Elementary Dutch (only taught in Fall), 4 credits
In this course, you will learn the basic grammar of Dutch and get intensive practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing basic Dutch in meaningful contexts. Through the language you will get acquainted with the country, its society and its people. At the end of the course you will be able to understand basic Dutch and make yourself understood in everyday situations.
DUTCH 1220 Continuing Dutch (only taught in Spring), 4 credits
Prerequisite: DUTCH 1210 or permission of instructor.
In this course, you will expand your knowledge of Dutch vocabulary & grammar through both the textbook and online resources such as Dutch TV and radio. It will give you more insight into Dutch society and you will improve your listening and reading skills. You will start to write texts in Dutch and will be able to improve your conversational skills through in-class discussions and interaction with native speakers.
DUTCH 2030 Intermediate Dutch (only taught in Fall), 3 credits
Prerequisite: DUTCH 1220 or permission of instructor.
In this course, we will increase the use of authentic texts to help you expand your knowledge of Dutch culture and proficiency in the language. Discussions, compositions, reading original texts, and contact with native speakers will result in improved control of Dutch grammatical structures and vocabulary. After completing this course, you will have a solid basis to understand Dutch and will be well on your way to become fluent in the language.
DUTCH 3000 Directed Studies (only taught in Spring), 1-4 credits
Individualized advanced Dutch studies. This course provides students with individualized programs which can be anything from advanced mastery in any or all skills to the mastery of Dutch for research, literature, and history in support of all disciplines.
DUTCH 4500 - Dutch Independent Study, 1-4 credits
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
Individualized advanced Dutch studies. This course gives students the possibility to work on texts or specific language skills that are of special interest to their discipline and research within individualized programs with supervision by the instructor.

Language Requirement
Students can fulfill the Language Requirement as stipulated by the College of Arts and Sciences, upon successfully completing DUTCH 2030.

Students are advised to contact the instructor for an appointment before enrolling.
The Dutch Language Program will be cut next year, so this will be the last year you can take Dutch courses at Cornell university.
