Project Title:
South Asian Landscapes of Death: Military Cemeteries and War Memorials
Project Abstract:
My work examines colonial initiatives to lay physical and visual claim to the South Asian landscape through the establishment of war memorials and military cemeteries. These projects expressed a renewed focus by colonial government officials on the production of history, and emphasized a martial masculinity in death. The majority of scholarship relating to this area of study has centered upon two locations in Kolkata (Park Street Cemetery and the “Black Hole of Calcutta”) and memorials in New Delhi and Kanpur that were constructed after the Uprising of 1857. However, I plan to study monuments which have been placed throughout the region at battlefields and points of military conflict outside of Kolkata or the events of 1857.
