Project Title:
Art, Islam, and the Makings of the Modern in Indonesia during the New Order Period
Project Abstract:
My dissertation seeks to define postcolonial modernity in art produced by Muslim artists in Indonesia during the New Order period by taking into consideration the history of mobility in the Indian Ocean over the longue durée of modernity. By bringing forward the importance of materiality in art and religions, I intend to reveal the complex negotiations between Islamic religion and aesthetics, ethnic identity, and Western modernism. This project looks at how Muslim artists throughout history have approached the question of art and visual imagery from the West and how they have negotiated their lived traditions related to Islamic practice, philosophy, and theology. I will take into account both precolonial artistic and visual traditions as well as artistic practices during the colonial period that have been highly influential in the making of the modern in Indonesian art.
