Project Title:
In Search of a 1950s Chinese Industrial City in Russian Archives
Project Abstract:
I am applying for the AAS CIAC Small Grant to support archival summer research in Moscow, Russia. My research examines reconstruction in the Chinese city of Shenyang after World War II. Despite its complex history and unique socioeconomic structure, Shenyang’s fascinating development has been sadly under-researched. So far in my doctoral studies at Cornell University, I have explored the factory and urban lives of Shenyang’s workers during the Maoist period, but require further research into the influence of the Soviet Union on Shenyang’s development after 1949. In so doing, I plan to go to key archives in Moscow this upcoming summer in search of documents regarding Sino-Soviet industrial exchange and any Soviet industrial city comparable to Shenyang.
