Glaubman, Jane: Travel Grant - 2016-2017

College of Arts and Sciences
Project Title:
Deplorable Cultus: Tolkien, Fandom, and the Neoliberal Age
Project Abstract:
This grant will support dissertation research in New Zealand in the winter of 2016-17. My dissertation supplies a critical history of fans and industries surrounding J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Research for this project requires extensive travel to conduct interviews and ethnographic work and to study in private and public archives of fanzines and other artifacts in the US, the UK, and New Zealand. Travel to New Zealand, the costliest part of the project, will support the final chapter, which deals with the intensive public and private investment in New Zealand that capitalized on the impact of Peter Jackson’s films of The Lord of the Rings by marketing the country as the "Home of Middle-earth."
