Project Title:
Music and Civic Identity in Multicultural Habsburg Czernowitz (1862-1918)
Project Abstract:
The city of Czernowitz was, after Vienna, the most diverse city in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, a result of extensive migration and an ambitious project to reintegrate the easternmost territories into a sprawling Habsburg Empire. Czernowitz was not only a model of successful multiculturalism, but also home to an extraordinary musical culture. In my dissertation, I am examining how these two facets of the city influenced each other, i.e., how music supported the city’s multicultural civic identity, and how the city’s diversity fostered its rich musical life.             For my project, I already did archival research in Ukraine, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Israel. A three-day sojourn in Romania made me aware that extensive research at the archives at Iașiand Bucharest is crucial for my project; I also need to consult additional archival resources in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and Vienna.
