Project Title:
Land Use Planning in Mitigating Natural Hazard Risk in Manila, Philippines
Project Abstract:
The Philippines’ location puts many of its inhabitants at considerable risk from natural hazards such as earthquakes and flooding. The nation’s poor are left comparably more vulnerable due to high concentrations living on land that is most susceptible to damage from natural hazards. The purpose of this project is to better understand the role of land use planning in mitigating risk from natural hazards in Manila, Philippines. Methodology includes interviews of local city planning officials, private developers, and scholars regarding existing and proposed land use plans to mitigate risk, field investigations, and consulting current scholarly research on the topic.
