Project Title:
Corporeal Connections: Grave Disturbance, Reuse and Violation in Roman Italy
Project Abstract:
In summer 2016 I propose to travel to Italy, in order to continue archaeological fieldwork in the Roman Imperial period cemetery at Vagnari, near Gravina in Puglia. The Vagnari cemetery is an important ongoing cemetery excavation in rural Italy with a collection of more than 120 burials, several of which were reused in antiquity, making it an ideal site for fieldwork and research for a doctoral dissertation about grave disturbance and reuse. I will be the site supervisor for a bioarchaeology field school that instructs undergraduate students in archaeological methods. In addition to excavation activity, I will have access to previously excavated material and the museum study collection, which is an important data set for my research.
