The Center intends to provide ca. 10 fellowships every year for scholars and graduate students affiliated with North American institutions interested in spending one or two semesters in Sofia.
ARCS maintains collaboration and contacts with members of the following Bulgarian institutions: Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" (Departments of Classics, History, and Archaeology); Varna Free University; New Bulgarian University; American University in Bulgaria; Plovdiv Agrarian University; Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; Health Psychology Research Center; Agency for Bulgarians Abroad at the Council of Ministers; Fulbright Commission in Bulgaria; Center for Advanced Study-Sofia; Society for Alternative Culture and Education "VIR."
The library is available to all scholars, and will gradually become a significant resource for both local and visiting scholars. Computers with fast internet are available for research purposes and users may bring their own laptops and take advantage of the Center’s wireless or cable connections.
ARCS will issue a periodical devoted to scholarly publications and a newsletter describing the Center's activities, both accessible on the Center's website.
The Center will facilitate research in Bulgaria and other Balkan countries by offering fellows and research teams logistical support. Fellows will be able to take advantage of the network established by the Center for use of the resources of Bulgarian institutions; and the Center will obtain necessary permits and approvals for research projects (for most archaeological projects, scholars must apply directly to the Institute of Archaeology but they will be able to draw upon the Center for advice).
The Center will facilitate training in the languages of the region for American scholars and, support language study programs.
ARCS hosts conferences, guest lectures, seminars and talks by visiting fellows, and other cultural events.
