What is the Institute for African Development?

The Institute for African Development (IAD) is a program at Cornell University that was established in 1987 as a campus wide initiative to develop Cornell’s activities towards further development in Africa. The program fosters teaching, research and outreach linked to various academic disciplines at Cornell.

What kinds of activities and programs is the institute involved in?

The Institute sponsors seminars, conferences, and symposia, facilitates the development of new Africa-related courses, manages two tuition fellowship programs for African students who wish to come to Cornell University for graduate study, and offers grants for faculty and students to travel for research and professional meetings. In addition, the Institute hosts a Special Speaker, Distinguished Scholar, and Visiting Fellows program, and publishes both a bimonthly newsletter, Africa Notes, and an Occasional Paper Series.

Where is the Institute located and how can I get information from the same?

Fellowships

How can I apply for the IAD Tuition Fellowship and the SA Provost Fellowships?

You must first be accepted to Cornell University as a graduate student. To find out more about this application, please go to the university web site, www.cornell.edu. In addition to your application form to Cornell University, you must submit a statement of purpose indicating that you would like to be nominated for the IAD or SA Provost Fellowships. The Institute’s Fellowships and Grants committee will then review your nomination letter.

I wish to apply for studies at another university. Will I be eligible for the fellowships?

Only graduate students accepted to Cornell University are eligible to receive the IAD tuition and SA Provost Fellowships. The Institute for African Development does not give tuition fellowships to students studying at any other institution apart from Cornell, nor does it give travel grants for travel that is not associated with the University.

I want to apply for undergraduate studies. Will I be eligible for the fellowships?

The Institute for African Development does not offer fellowships for undergraduate study.

I have dual citizenship. Will I be eligible for the fellowships?

To be eligible for the IAD Tuition Fellowship, you must be a full citizen of any country in sub-Saharan Africa. The list of countries in this region is as follows:
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo Rep., Congo DR, Djibouti, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
If you are not from any of these countries, you are not eligible for the fellowships.

To be eligible for the SA Provost Tuition Fellowship, you must be a full citizen of South Africa.

Travel Grant

How can I apply for IAD Travel Grant?

The announcements for IAD Travel Grants are made each February. As soon as you note the announcement, download the application forms from the Internet or swing by 170 Uris Hall to collect hard copies of the same. You can get further details from the web site.

Courses

Does the Institute for African Development offer any courses?

The Institute for African Development coordinates CRP 477/677- Issues in African Development, a seminar series that facilitates discussions and information exchange on various topics around African development. The course caters to both undergraduate and graduate course work and is offered every semester. The IAD Fellows are expected to attend the seminars as long as they are fellows in the Institute.

Scholars Programs

What is a Distinguished Scholar and how can I participate in the Distinguished Scholars Program?

Every year, the Institute for African Development invites and sponsors a Distinguished Africanist Scholar to visit Cornell, make a public presentation, and facilitate classroom discussions with the Cornell community under the Distinguished Scholars Series Program. To be considered for this, one must be nominated by a department at Cornell. What is a Visiting Scholar and how can I participate in the Visiting Scholars program?

A Visiting Scholar is a scholar who wants to spend time at Cornell University on appointment carrying out research on Africa in various disciplines. As the scholar is not offered a salary or monetary stipend, (s)he must have adequate financial support from other sources. Publications

How can I send an article to be published by the Institute for African Development?

There are two ways. You can have an article published either in the bimonthly newsletter, Africa Notes, or in the Occasional Paper Series. You should write a letter to the editor of Africa Notes requesting your intent and giving a short abstract of the content of your article. As we receive numerous articles, we take each into consideration and publish the articles that are relevant to the theme at the time. You can get further details from the web site.

What is Africa Notes? How can I subscribe and what is the subscription fee?

The Africa Notes is a bimonthly newsletter published at the Institute on various topics of interest around specific African themes. It contains stimulating articles, update excerpts, job and internship openings, conference and seminar announcements, and other information relevant to African development.

There is no fee required to subscribe to Africa Notes. All you need to do is send your mailing address to ciad@cornell.edu or to The Editor, Africa Notes, 170 Uris Hall, Ithaca, NY, 14853.
