Cornell University combines the intellectual breadth of one of the world’s leading research universities with the broad array of practical and professional training programs long associated with NY’s land-grant university. Cornell’s East Asia Program, charged with fostering knowledge of the histories, cultures, and contemporary affairs of East Asia serves as a cross-campus clearinghouse for information and is a focal unit for all of the university’s East Asia-related students, faculty, community outreach, and public activities.
The East Asia Program (EAP) also edits, produces, and markets its own influential scholarly publication series. Standing at the hub of a campus-wide network that encompasses virtually all of Cornell's schools and colleges, the EAP coordinates and supports attention to East Asia in the form of courses, faculty research, libraries, art exhibitions, language-learning resources, student organizations, and exchange programs.
The East Asia Program is recognized as a National Resource Center (NRC) by the United States Department of Education. As such, the Program is nationally renowned as one of the country’s premier centers for teaching and research on East Asia and in promoting advanced foreign language training, area and international knowledge in the liberal arts and applied disciplines focused on East Asia. This prestigious grant is awarded to a select number of East Asia programs at top U.S. universities and institutions. In addition, EAP was recently awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grant by US/ED. Together with the NRC funding, the FLAS fellowship program supports students who wish to acquire a high level of competence in languages critical to the national needs of the United States and a fuller understanding of the areas, regions, or countries in which that language is used.
