Amy Pearlman Awarded the 2009 Harrop and Ruth Freeman Prize in Peace Studies

Posted on: 4/24/2009

The Harrop and Ruth Freeman Prize in Peace Studies is awarded annually in the spring to a Cornell graduating senior. The Freemans established the prize to offer recognition and encouragement to Cornell students actively engaged in promoting peace. Congratulations to Amy Pearlman for winning the prize in 2009.

Amy Pearlman is a graduating senior in the College of Arts and Sciences with a major in Near Eastern Studies and a minor in International Relations. She has held numerous leadership positions at Cornell: president of Cornell Hillel; president of Students for Tolerance, Awareness and Remembering Survivors (STARS); and co-founder of the Hillel-Black Students United Katrina Initiative. While president of Cornell Hillel, she helped launch the Jewish-Muslim Dialogue, a series of dinners to bring students together to build trust, understanding, and respect. During a turbulent time in the Middle East the dialogue at Cornell broke down, but Amy continued to play a constructive role in bridging divisions on campus. Under the Hillel-Black Students United Katrina Initiative she traveled to New Orleans to help rebuild homes and schools. After graduation Amy plans to spend a year in the Middle East and her long-term goal is to continue confronting issues of peace promotion and conflict resolution, drawing on her experience at Cornell to contribute positively to the international dialogue.  For additional information on the prize, a photograph of Pearlman, and information and photographs of previous winners click here.
