Statement of Purpose
The Cuba Working Group at Cornell is developing an integrated program of
teaching, research and scholarly exchange that would enhance mutual
understanding of Cuban science, society and environment in a period of rapid
transition. While recognizing the impacts of the sustained U.S. embargo on
Cuba's social and economic well-being and on its cultural, scientific and
technical production, the Working Group seeks to place these impacts in a
broader regional and historical context.
Cornell brings to this effort its strengths in the physical, biological and
natural sciences, nutrition, development studies, anthropology and history.
The University administration has expressed its support for the Working
Group by funding development of a new interdisciplinary course on Cuba as
well as some scholarly exchange. The group is now seeking outside funding
to develop the three facets of its program in collaboration with selected
Cuban educational, research and development institutions.
