2008 K-12 School Postcard Competition: My European Vacation
Imagine that you have won a vacation to a country anywhere in Europe. What country would you choose? How would you get there? How would you communicate? What language would you speak? What would you see? Draw a picture to tell us how you imagine meeting another culture!
Tailored to students of all ages, “My European Vacation” was an outreach activity designed to help young people reflect on traveling to a European country. This activity aimed to help raise awareness on cultural differences and how to cope with them. Students were asked to think of places or people they have met or would like to meet from a different cultural background than their own and then create drawings, paintings, collages or other pieces of art that portray their imagined experience.
Over 90 entries were received from the following schools:
- Dewitt Middle School
- Home Schooled, Tompkins County
- Ithaca High School
- Liverpool Elementary School
- Newfield Elementary School
- Trumansburg Elementary School
- Trumansburg High School
Postcards are also currently on display at the Tompkins County Public Library.
Prizes: All winners will receive a tee shirt, European goody bag and certificate. The first place winner will receive a gift certificate for books, and a donation will be made to the library fund at the school where the winner attends. Congratulations to the artists of all of these creative entries!
