SICCA / MANON PRE-DISSERTATION GRANT

Who is eligible for the Michele Sicca Pre-Dissertation and the Manon Michels Einaudi Pre-dissertation Grant?

This Sicca Grant supports pre-dissertation research on Europe in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The Manon Grant One supports one student each year from one of the following fields: European art and architecture, art history, literature, philosophy, and culture. The chief aim of both grants is to help Cornell graduate students explore possible topics or otherwise launch their dissertation work, although applications from students whose dissertations are already in progress will also be considered.

When is the application deadline?

The application deadline is February 1st. Should the deadline fall on a weekend, the application will be due in 120 Uris Hall on the following business day.

May I hold more than one IES fellowship during the same period?

No

If I had an IES grant or fellowship in the past, may I apply for the same fellowship again in subsequent years?

The only fellowship that allows multiple awards is the FLAS fellowship.

If I receive funding from another source, may I use my IES-fellowship in addition?

In some cases, yes, but the dollar amount of the fellowship may be adjusted.

Can I apply for more than one IES fellowship in the same year?

You can apply for a Luigi Einaudi and a Mario fellowship in the same year, since unsuccessful applicants for the Mario fellowship are automatically considered in the Luigi Einaudi fellowship pool.

Can I apply for more than one IES research grant?

The application for the Sicca and a Manon research grant is shared. Therefore, it is not necessary to submit an application for both. Unsuccessful Manon applicants are automatically considered for the Sicca award.

Can I apply for a research grant and an academic year fellowship in the same year?

No, since the awards are designated to support students at different stages in their Ph.D. programs(s).

May I use IES research grants in the U.S. or in a non-European country?

No, research must take place in Europe, except in the case of the Mario Einaudi Fellowship where a comparative Europe-US project allows some time to be spent on research in the US.

Are there additional steps I need to complete if I am awarded funding?

Yes. All research carried out by a Cornell student involving human participants must be submitted to the Institutional Review Board for Human Participants (IRB) to obtain the necessary training and approvals or exemptions. It is the responsibility of each fellowship recipient to complete these requirements prior to receiving funding. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in a forfeiture of IES funds.
