Michele Sicca Research Grant Recipients for 2005

Kimberly Berman (Textiles and Apparel) was awarded a grant to conduct research in Turkey. Her project focuses on “Development of a Sustainability Model for Turkish Hand-woven Carpets.”

Matthew Davenport (History) will contemplate “Living Exile and Imagining Restoration: The Stuart Court During the Interregnum.” His award allows him to perform research in the United Kingdom and France that is essential to his dissertation project.

Xiaojia Hou (History) was awarded a research grant to support research in Russia. Her project will analyze “Inventing Socialist Rural China: The Formation of Agricultural Cooperativization in Early 1950s.”

Jai Kwan Jung (Government) will examine “The Paradox of Institution Building After Civil Wars: Trade-Off Between Short-term Peacemaking and Long-Term Democracy Building.” The funding from this grant enables research in Hungary, Norway, Sweden and Bosnia.

Kara Laney (International Agriculture and Rural Development) will scrutinize “Individual Farming as an Economic Strategy for Rural Development in Romania.” The funding from this award will make research in Poland and Romania possible.

Casey Servais (German Studies) was awarded a summer research grant that facilitates research in Germany. He will focus on “Weimar Literature and the Jurisprudence of Crisis.”

Pavel Vacek (Economics) will research “Productivity Spillover Through Backward Linkages: The Case of the Czech Republic.” Funding from his award will be used for associated research costs while in the Czech Republic.
