Recipients for 2004-2005

The Institute for European Studies congratulates Faculty Research Travel Grant recipients! The awards, made possible through our National Resource Center (NRC) grant and the Luigi Einaudi Chair, are intended for professional development and have been awarded to Cornell faculty to conduct research during the academic year 2004-2005. Recipients are:

Mabel Berezin Mabel Berezin (Associate Professor, Sociology). Professor Berezin’s research project focuses on the relationship between the rise of right leaning populist politics in contemporary Europe and the process of European integration. She will conduct this research in France during May-June of 2005.

Dominic Boyer
Dominic Boyer (Assistant Professor, Anthropology). Professor Boyer’s research project will take place in fall 2004. The research involves an ethnographic investigation of “The Production of ‘Regional News’ in eastern German Public Broadcasting.”

Valerie Bunce
Valerie Bunce (Professor and Chair, Department of Government). Professor Bunce was granted funding to conduct research and interview politicians on “Bargaining between Serbia and Montenegro.” This research will take place in spring of 2005.

Holly Case
Holly Case (Assistant Professor, History). Professor Case has received funding to complete research for a book manuscript on “Regions, borders and ethnic violence: A history of the Holocaust and the Transylvanian question.” Research will be done in the archives and libraries in Hungary and Romania during May-July of 2005.

Maria Antonia Garcés
Maria Antonia Garcés (Associate Professor of Hispanic Literature, Romance Studies). Professor Garcés has received funding to conduct research in Sicily church archives to find documents on Dr. Antonio de Sosa. This research will take place in May-June 2005.

Elena Iankova
Elena Iankova (Lecturer, Ph.D., Johnson Graduate School of Management) Dr. Iankova’s research will take place in Dec. 2004-Jan. 2005 and will focus on “EU Accession and the transformation of business-government relations in Bulgaria.”

Judith Kellock
Judith Kellock (Associate Professor, Music) Professor Kellock’s research focuses on “Residency for performance and workshops in Bardou, France” and will take place from May-June 2005.

Joan Ramón Resina
Joan Ramón Resina (Professor, Romance Studies and Comparative Literature) was granted an award to study the literary creation of the modern image of Barcelona, focusing on writers’ contributions to the construction of the social imagery of the city in the XIXth and XXth centuries. This research will be done in summer 2005.

Eunice Rodriguez
Eunice Rodriguez (Associate Professor, Policy Analysis and Management) will conduct research on “Employment trajectories, social benefits and health in the aging in Germany” in the summer of 2005.

José M. Rodríguez-García
José M. Rodríguez-García (Assistant Professor of Spanish Literature, Romance Studies) will travel to Spain in the summer of 2005 to research Spanish Language translations of Foreign-Language poetry published in the early years of General Franco’s Dictatorship.

Daniel R. Schwarz (Professor, English Department). Professor Schwarz will perform further research on the relationship between modern art and modern literature. This research will encompass review of important exhibits in London and Paris.
