Recipients for 2007-2008

The Institute for European Studies congratulates Junior Faculty Travel Grant recipients! This competition promotes excellence in Europe-related scholarly research and/or artistic activity by assistant professors at Cornell who have not yet been granted tenure and must be used during academic year 2007-2008. Recipients are:

Michael Fontaine (Classics) was awarded funding to support travel to Oxford in the summer of 2008. While there, he will participate in a course on Greek palaeography that is being taught by experts in the field. This opportunity will provide relevant hands-on experience with manuscripts that are held in the Bodleian library and will also benefit his future research efforts.

Chris Y. Kim (Music) was awarded funding to travel to Switzerland in the spring 2008 semester. His research will focus on “Understanding and Evaluating the Conducting Curriculum and Teaching Methods at the Academy of Music in Zurich” with Johannes Schlaefli. The project will conclude with an opera production that will take place in Prague, Czech Republic.

José M. Rodriguez-García (Romance Studies) was awarded funding to conduct research in Spain in May-June 2008. The project “The City of Translation: Poetry and Ideology in Nineteenth-Century Spain” will study the relationship of transnational theories and practices.

Michael Wagner (Linguistics) was awarded funding to underwrite travel costs associated with the project “Prosody at the Interface Between Sound and Meaning.” His research will take place in Potsdam/Berlin over the summer of 2008.
