Language Instruction Travel Grant Recipients for 2007-08

The Institute for European Studies congratulates the 2007-08 Language Instruction Travel Grant recipients! These grants supported travel to professional meetings or language pedagogy workshops for professional development and were awarded to Cornell professors, senior lecturers, or lecturers who teach European languages. The awards were made possible through our U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center (NRC) grant. Recipients are:

K.E. Bättig von Wittelsbach (Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Romance Studies) was awarded funding to support travel to the annual EALTA (European Association for Language Testing and Assessment) conference held in Athens, Greece. This year's theme of the EALTA conference is “Assessment Literacy in Europe and Beyond: Realities and Prospects.” K. Bättig hopes that the exchange of ideas at the conference can be productively incorporated into the framework of Italian-language evaluation practices at Cornell.

Gunhild Lischke (German Studies – German Lecturer) was awarded funding to support travel to the annual meeting of the CIBER (Center for International Business Education and Research) organization. This meeting will take place in April 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The latest developments in “content teaching” will be presented and will provide a deeper knowledge of the German business world. Ideas and information will be evaluated and integrated into the Cornell classroom.

Kostas Yiavis (Classics – Greek Lecturer) was awarded funding to support travel to Washington, D.C., in November 2007. While there, he will attend a fall colloquium on Greek language organized by Harvard University. He plans to conduct research that will enhance teaching of Modern Greek at Cornell.
