FLAS Program

The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) Program assists in pursuing training in order to acquire a high level of competence in one or more languages critical to national needs of the United States, and a fuller understanding of the areas, regions, or countries in which that language is commonly used. These fellowships provide a stipend and tuition fees for a full academic year for study of an approved foreign language and associated area studies coursework. In addition, a select number of fellowships are provided for summer intensive language study, either in the US or in Europe. In making awards, priority is given to students pursuing training in the less commonly taught languages and to master’s degree students who are more likely to pursue government service or enter a professional field. All FLAS recipients are required to enroll full-time in language and area studies courses throughout the duration of the award. Note that the FLAS fellowships are not designed to support dissertation research. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for FLAS funds. The following languages are approved by the U.S. Department of Education for Europe. (bold indicates less commonly taught languages): Catalan, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish

NOTE: IT IS THE APPLICANT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT THE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE/LEVEL WILL BE TAUGHT DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR.
