The Institute for European Studies was founded in 1973 as the Western Societies Program (WSP). Over the years, responding to the changes in Europe, WSP evolved into a joint center housing a West European Studies Program and a Russian and East European Studies Program. Soon after 1989, the two programs were blended into the current Institute for European Studies with its trans-European focus. The Institute's Directors & Faculty affiliates are scholars working on all areas of Europe and neighboring regions.
