The Occasional Paper Series has been created to publish multi-disciplinary, holistic, policy-oriented articles in all fields of African studies relevant to development. Manuscripts are reviewed by peers on the basis of scholarship qualities, the extent of the original research, the rigor of the analysis, the significance of the conclusions as well as their relevance to contemporary issues affecting Africa. The Series publishes two issues a year.
Submitting a Paper
The Institute for African Development (IAD), Cornell University, requests original manuscripts for its Occasional Paper Series. More than ever, the continent of Africa (inclusive of the disparate countries making it up) faces enormous challenges:
- to fashion responsive and accountable governing structures;
- to create representative institutions;
- to minister to the needs of the populace and uphold their rights and dignity;
- to arrest the slide into anarchy and put out fires of conflict in some countries;
- to confront forces that oppress women, minority communities and other groups within its confines;
- to foster sound economic growth while maintaining a healthy environment and sustainable livelihoods; and,
- to halt its increasing marginalization, and give voice to its concerns in the global arena
The IAD Occasional Paper Series welcome articles that explore issues related to the theme and that offer penetrating insight into the nature and degree of organizing, the factors that hinder organization, lessons to be learned (applicable best practice approaches), and a program of action at the community, national, regional, continental and Diasporic levels.
Requirements for Submission of Papers
To expedite the publication of papers, all contributions should adhere to the following instructions:
- all manuscripts must be typed, single-sided, double-spaced, on a letter-sized (8 1/2 x 11 ) paper. Tables, charts, maps and other illustrations must be camera-ready, numbered accordingly (eg. table 1, table 2, etc) and with a title at the top;
- manuscripts must be up to journal article length (10,000 to 12,000 words);
- include no longer than a 250-word abstract, and a signed statement indicating that the paper has not previously been published or is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere; and,
- the submitted manuscript should be in accord with the most recent referencing format of the Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press), with notes and references at the end of the paper.
