As New York’s land grant institution, Cornell University has a mission “to extend the riches of science for the benefit of all, with a special new emphasis on responsibility to the community in the form of research and extension serving public needs.” In adherence of this mandate to serve, the Institute for African Development (IAD) created its Outreach Program.

The Outreach Program’s objective is to enrich young people’s educational experience and expand their knowledge and understanding of Africa, its cultures and challenges. IAD offers a number of resources to facilitate the teaching of Africa in area classrooms; these include teacher training workshops, a speakers bureau, and a resource website.

IAD developed the Outreach Program with the support of area teachers, former school district board members, former educators, community members and Cornell faculty.

For additional information on the Outreach Program, contact Jackie Sayegh or Alexis Boyce at 607-255-5499/6849 or by e-mail at asb18@is.cornell.edu.
